Owls pick up seventh win with 74-61 victory over Warhawks After defeating Troy on Thursday night, Florida Atlantic looked to establish momentum heading into Saturdays match-up against Louisiana-Monroe. Putting up the second balanced effort in a row, they did just that knocking off the Warhawks 74-61 at FAU Arena. The weather was cold, causing a brief campus wide power outage that interrupted play for about five minutes late in the second half. But the shooting was hot, as the Owls finished at 51.8% from the floor and saw five players post in double figures. The win places FAU at 7-9 overall and 3-2 in league play – surpassing last seasons totals in both categories. Despite being out rebounded 38-21, the Owls put on a fine defensive showing forcing 21 Warhawk turnovers and stealing the ball eight times. Utilizing a four guard line-up for the second consecutive game, Alex Tucker drew the start again as the Owls held the Warhawks leading offensive performer, Tony Hooper (13.9 ppg), scoreless. He did a great job on defense again, and he had 10 assists. Those types of stats never show on the scoreboard, Jarvis said. FAU sprinted out to an 8-0 lead early, but then cooled – allowing the Warhawks to close to within 3 midway through the first period at 14-11. However a 15-0 run immediately thereafter pushed the lead to 18 and put the Owls comfortably in control the rest of the way. When you learn how to practice, you learn how to play. I think we are getting to that point that we can play for a whole forty minutes, said FAU guard Sanchez Hughley. The Owls were led by Greg Gantts 20 points, while Dynile Forbes paced the Warhawks with 24. Florida Atlantic will be back in action this Thursday against Western Kentucky (9-4, 2-0) in the first of a two game Sun Belt road swing.
