George Johnson III WR 5-11, 180 Transfer UMass The Florida Atlantic football team has been rebuilding their depth at wide receiver following the departures of Lajohntay Wester and Tony Johnson, getting their latest addition in George Johnson III. He is transferring from UMass and will make his way to Boca Raton next year. Declaring his allegiance on Saturday evening, Johnson III leaves UMass after two seasons. In 24 career games, he made 63 catches for 823 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He has also taken part in special teams, getting two kick returns for 20 yards and a pair of tackles. This past year was a solid one for the veteran receiver, making 35 receptions for 421 yards and three touchdowns which are all career-highs. One of his best showings came against Miami (OH) on September 9th, having a season-high in catches with seven for 50 yards and a touchdown. Johnson was rated a three-star prospect with an 85 score by 247Sports coming out of Martin County High School, ranking him the 98th-best athlete in the country and the 142nd-best player in the state of Florida. He received many Power Five offers from Georgia, Florida State, and Oregon among others before committing to Michigan in 2019. He spent three seasons taking part in the scout team, defense, and special teams with the Wolverines before heading over to UMass. “He is a leaner bodied kid, but is well built in the upper body. He has been a versatile high school player who played receiver and quarterback,” 247Sports’ national recruiting analyst Allen Trieu said in his evaluation on Johnson III in 2018. He projected him as a Power Five starter, giving him the NFL comparison of Chester Rogers from the Indianapolis Colts. “Elusive, makes defenders miss in the open field and has good burst through creases. Long speed (4.55 forty) is good, but not elite. Will run hard and put his head down and deliver contact. Has not fully concentrated on receiver yet, so he still has learning to do as a route-runner, but his natural athleticism and ball skills show up at the position. Has enough size and skills to play in the slot or outside.” He is now the 23rd member of FAU’s budding 2024 class. He chose the Owls over Marshall, North Texas, and Arkansas State among others. Johnson becomes the third receiver to transfer to the Owls for the 2024 season, joining the likes of Joseph Young from Coffeyville Community College and Marlyn Johnson from Buffalo.
